The late psychologist, Prescott Lecky proved in hundreds of experiments with school children
that ability depends upon our own concept of the type of person we are.
It was Lecky’s theory that at the center of this system of ideas – the very “building block” idea, so to
speak – was the person’s concept of himself. All other ideas, said Lecky, must be consistent with this
central idea, which he called the “ego ideal.”
If a person’s “ego ideal,” or idea about himself, was that of a “dumb person,” he found it difficult to learn. If his ego ideal was that of a person “poor in mathematics” or “not mechanically minded,” the person’s behavior seemed to bear it out.
“Dumb” Kids Become “A” Students
In one amazing series of experiments Lecky turned “poor spellers” into grade A spellers almost overnight by “re-educating” the students’ opinions of themselves.
One little girl whom he cured of stuttering by this method admitted that she would have been “ashamed
not to stutter” when she perceived herself as a “stutterer.”
A student who just “could not learn Latin,” who had failed three times previously, became and
“A” student making 91 on an examination. Lecky even found that an I.Q. test does not necessarily measure
the native intelligence of a student, but only his ability to demonstrate his intelligence while holding a
certain “ego ideal.”
Does Martial Arts Make Kids Smarter?
There has been a wonderful history at our school of kids who’s grades have gone through the roof.
No other activity “re-educates” kids opinions of themselves like our Kids Character & Leadership Martial Arts program does. A unique program that will prepare your child for future success. A high performance personal development program that is not seen any where else.
Success Always.
